(Actually located in Kittery, Maine) Launched - July, 1943 Saturday 11 March, 1944 DIMENSIONS: Length 311' 9" Beam - 27' 2" Draft - 15' 3" at surface trim DISPLACEMENT: Surface - 1526 tons Submerged - 2424 tons ARMAMENT: Guns: Originally, one 3 inch 50-caliber (MK 12) and two 20 mms (MK 5). eventually, one 5 inch 25-caliber (MK 40), one 40 mm (MK 3) and one 20 mm (MK 10). There were several variation in-between. Note: Specifications for the Balao class are the same as the Gato class except the Balao can go to 400 feet and were designed for modular construction internally. There were nine variants of Balao class boats.
